In response to concerns that reintroducing alewives could lead to algae blooms, Upstream Cobbossee commissioned a thorough review. It found no harm to waters in Maine where alewives have been reintroduced. And American eels may be a game-changer in improving water quality - if they can get by the dams.
Students from the Gardiner Area High School are conducting surveys of alewives each May. They take scale samples, weight, sex and length to better understand the spring run. This fun movie by one of the students captures the spirit of Cobbosseeconte.
